Abstract:

This research deals with the importance of literary texts and practices in German courses as foreign language delivered in the universities. In this context, research on teaching literature shall be carried out through German course book titled 'EM neu' and in connection with this book and its analysis. Within the scope of the study, research shall be made in relation to literary texts contained in German course book titled 'em neu'. First, researches and theories on the course book shall be studied with a theoretical point of view. Secondly, research with the topic of 'literary texts in foreign language courses' shall be briefly concentrated upon. In this context, the concept of the course book shall be defined, which is followed by the description of the literature and then course book titled 'em neu' shall be analysed under the illustration of literary texts in the course books titled 'em neu' Brückenkurs, 'em neu' Hauptkurs and 'em neu' Abschlusskurs. Finally, seminar practice shall be evaluated on the basis of the exercise tasks related to literature in the context of 'em neu' Hauptkurs. Therefore, exercises prepared by the students of German higher school of Hacettepe University shall constitute the subject matter of this research. Qualitative and quantitative methods shall be applied in this study on the grounds that exercises which are and not studied shall be systematically determined and assessed because the objective of this research is to determine, as a consequence, whether the students can successfully analyse the literature-oriented exercise. In this context, the exercises shall be assessed in three categories, namely 'good' (expectations are met at high level), 'medium' (expectations are met) and 'bad' (expectations are not met). Therefore, three-graded assessment analysis follows the order of good, medium and bad. All the results of the literature-oriented exercises in the 'em neu' Hauptkurs shall be provided as obsolete numbers or percentage values. Data obtained from different units of the course book shall be analysed and interpreted within the framework of teaching and learning development. Finally, good, medium and bad exercise analyses of DaF students shall be explained and interpreted. Final results of exercise studies for the literary texts in the 'em neu' Hauptkurs reveal such results: assessment data in the category of 'good' reveals that exercises given meet the expectations from exercises particularly in 2nd unit titled 'Die gerettete Zunge' and 3rd unit titled 'Berlin! Berlin!'. Exercises are analysed by the students in details and with appropriate quality. Group of students has revealed sufficient basic knowledge in the beginning of teaching and learning process. Percentage expression of assessment of exercises for 2nd unit titled 'Die gerettete Zunge' and 3rd unit titled 'Berlin! Berlin!' exhibits rate of 38%, whereas this rate is 44% for 3rd unit titled 'Berlin! Berlin!. Totally, 31,6% of the exercises meet the expectations at high level. Assessment data from the category of 'Medium' indicates that exercises of the topic titled 'Das Ideal' in 1st unit is analysed at 'medium level' with the rate of 34%. Indeed, exercises given are generally understood but partially analysed. Exercises analysed by the students with medium quality in the following units gradually decrease. Among the total exercises, 22,5% of them meet expectations at medium level. 48,8% of them unfortunately is determined to be analysed in a way not to meet the expectations of almost half of the tasks. Apart from them, the number of poorly-analysed exercises by the students in the following parts of the units gradually increases. Assessment data in the category of 'bad' indicates that the exercises in the literature particularly in 5th and 7th units are analysed deficiently. Percentage expression for assessing the exercises of the topic titled "Briefe an die chinesische Vergangenheit" in 5th unit is 63%, whereas the percentage expression for assessing the exercises of the topic titled "Der Fisch" in the 5th unit is 49%. Percentage expression for assessing the exercises titled "Halb zwei" in Unit 7 is 55%. This situation indicates that the students are not good at analysing exercises of basic knowledge and the questions are heavy and they are lack in topic-oriented basic knowledge at the end of the course-oriented teaching period. For this reason, it is not possible to analyse the exercises successfully. According to success rating of different units, the category of 'bad' ranks the first with the rate of 45,8%, the category of 'good' ranks the second (31,6%) and the category of 'medium' ranks the third or final with the rate of 22,5%. Consequences indicate that the exercises contained in the units of the course book used in 'em neu' Hauptkurs are analysed by students of Hacettepe University in a way not to meet the expectations. In this context, it is remarkable that most of students lack in basic knowledge. Only small part of the students has good and topic-based basic knowledge. Since the exercises qualitatively require creative / free literary expression and essential / topic-based knowledge and appropriate information about language as pre-requisite, these exercises either are analysed to some agree or failed to be analysed. In this case, the exercises can be analysed only in parts or deficiently and these exercises cannot be partially understood due to lack of information about the language and thus cannot be analysed. It can be considered that this situation results from the absence of German reading habits among the students. Generally speaking, the students fail to show particular tendency to exercises containing literary texts in the course books. There are open exercises in the literary texts in the course book of 'em neu' basic course and to this degree; students are required to have competency and skills to apply German language as it is required. According to the hypothesis of this research, dealing with literary texts and the use of literary texts in the course book of 'em neu' basic course wouldn't create considerable problems for the students during the analyses. In this line, this would make positive contributions to improvement of language knowledge and four skills. However, final results indicate that the students have rather lower rates of success. In this line, it is possible that the concept of course book of 'em neu' basic course is not suitable for transmitting foreign language to students of Hacettepe University because course book of 'em neu' basic course is established on the basic and prior knowledge which is not actually owned by the students contained in the research. In the closing analysis of this research, advice is given to the teachers and reference suggestions are pointed in relation to how to use and apply literary texts to foreign language in future.
