Abstract:

Being shaped opposed to Kemalist modernization and its community engineering projects based on enlightenment Turkish conservatism dispersed to anti-communism, against to improving leftist movement. This tradition, defined as nationalist-conservatism, put the national identity into Islam orbit in order to prevent the leftist movement. The topic of this thesis is Erol Güngör. Because of try to maintain nationalist-conservative movement and worked hard to exceed this tradition on the some points, he has been an important person in nationalist-conservative tradition. This thesis is analyzes Erol Güngörs views on modernization, nationalism, İslam and cultural changings. Morever this thesis aims to do a critical reading of nationalist-conservatism through the case of Erol Güngör. In this context, the conclusion is that nationalist-conservatism tried to maintain hegemony through eclecticism such as Turkish-İslam Synthesis on the face of social problems. However, it had not been successful. Erol Güngör tried to exceed the reactionary and orthodox side of nationalist-conservatism . From this aspect Güngör begin a quest on nationalism, being eligible for modernization. In this context, Güngör tried to redefine the nationalist-conservative conservatism by abiding its essense. Because of barren atmosphere in 1970?s, Güngör?s thoughts have been succesful as from second half of 1980?s. Güngör shaped his nationalism on Islam, interacted with modernity and continuity on Ottoman inheritage. When Güngör reacted positively acculturation, defined indigenousness non-reactionary context. Finally, Güngör contributed to nationalist conservatism from this position.
