Abstract:

This study is prepared in order to understand of the historical development of prefabrication in interiors and the relationship between spaces and products manufactured by contemporary prefabrication technology. Basically, the architectural and interior developments of prefabricated buildings are examined in the process from the first emergence of the technology to today. In the chapter following the first one which describes the subject, method and purpose of the study, the definition of prefabrication starting from its etymological origin and its classifications made by salient attributes of prefabricated structures is clarified. The classifications of prefabricated structures are made in terms of construction types, weight and materials and explained under subtitles in detail. In the next section of the study, general information about prefabricated buildings in the historical process is reviewed. The history of prefabrication is examined under four main headings; the first appearance of prefabrication, before modernism, after modernism and its development in Turkey. This historical process is followed by the examination of prefabrication in the basis of spatial analysis. In this part, the concept of module and unit are described; in accordance with these definitions, products or prefabricated spaces whether they were designed for some special occasions or gained success in national or international competitions are analyzed. Products are assessed in terms of their design, technology and ability to generate space. Based on this assessment, the current state of contemporary prefabricated interior products and applications is tried to be identified, and the supported ideas about their contributions to the construction industry are consolidated through these products. In the context of space, product and their relations with each other, the suggestions regarding the future position of prefabrication are tried to put forward.
